Authentic Log Home, River Front 35+ acres     $669,000

                                                                                                  Price Reduced

No, it's not an old house! Located in the foothills of the southern Virginia Blue Ridge, this 3500 square foot home was built in 2004 from the elements of four well-preserved structures. It is mostly made of chestnut logs about 150 years old. Wherever possible, the materials and details are from the period 1850-1920, or new materials that are true to the period. The highly reflective metal roof is true to period and very helpful with keeping the house cool. And, notice the traditionally built rock fireplace and chimney. The chimney cap itself is rock, the way it used to be done. Come inside .....

8 rooms with open floor plan

3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 1 half bath

Main floor laundry room

Central heat and A/C, separate second floor zone

Exposed beams and solid wood flooring throughout.

Year built 2004

35.25 +/- acres with 700 feet on the Smith River and big rocky creek running through the land

The house was built from 4 well-preserved buildings, disassembled and brought to the sight: A two-story servants' house known to be built about 1850; two tobacco barns, each about two stories high; and a tobacco pack house. This main, central room is in the 2-story house part. Through the archway, the living room with fireplace is in a part constructed from a tobacco barn. The ceiling is full-height with a balcony overlooking from the second floor. The back part of the house (see first photo above) is constructed from the pack house and houses the kitchen, office, and other rooms.

The foundation is stone. Every floor is wide pine planks. Every room is pre-wired for phone and computer. The windows are custom-made tilt-ins with insulated glass,  but made of wood and finished to complement the house. Most lighting fixtures and hardware are vintage, as well as the mantel and some doors. Three sets of redwood French doors were custom made. It's a departure from the pure authentic construction, but... French doors opening onto a veranda have no equal.

Here's the best part, 700 feet on the Smith River. This clean water is loaded with fish and is deep enough for canoeing, kayaking, even swimming. More pictures of the land and river are below. But first, step onto the porch on the way back inside.

This inviting veranda is 81 x 10.5 feet and spans the entire front of the house and wraps around both sides. The ceiling is lined with outdoor paddle fans.

Wide, open space, exposed beams everywhere.

The living room ceiling. (rest of room below)

The office area, right off the living room. Stairway to second floor.

The 18 x 17 living room used to be a tobacco barn. Office is to the right.

The main central room for sitting or eating, a spacious 25 x 17.

The 25 x 17 eat-in kitchen is vintage and custom. French doors to back porch.

The master bedroom on the main floor. French doors to the veranda. 18x17 Walk-in closet.

The bedroom door is the original from the tobacco barn that made this side of the house.

The master bath with antique tub also has a walk-in shower.

Custom cabinet and double sinks in the master bath.

And 3 rooms and a bath upstairs...

A private porch, perfect for a bedroom or study.

Modern bathroom with vintage touches.

The central room, with a bedroom beyond....

...and, a balcony over the living room.

Back to the great outdoors...

Spacious river bank area for picnicking, playing, putting your boat in, or just jumping in.

We can see the base of the rocky bluffs. A trail starts over there that winds up to the house.

This bridge spans a seasonal runoff ravine.

Back at the house, a veranda you could live on.

This open field of about 5 acres is all river bottom land. There's the house atop the bluff. The river area is reachable by road or trail.

This winter view was taken from the house. Taking out some smaller trees could make the view a year round thing.

This dog is enjoying a rocky perch above the river bank trail.

Another winter view, this one from the veranda.

A rocky creek flows through the property.

Waterfalls and pools

My favorite photo. The seller caught this perfect moment under the rainbow.
